Are You A Hoarder?

Many people call themselves hoarders and believe that they fall into this category, but in fact it’s a pretty rare condition.

So often, when I see their spaces for the first time, my new clients say things like, “I bet you haven’t seen this before!” and “I’m sure I’m the worst you’ve ever seen.” Most of the time, this is the opposite of what I’m actually thinking.

As a Professional Organizer, I have seen every variation of disorganization and overstuffed spaces, and I am rarely surprised at anything I see.  What people self-identify as unusual hoarding behaviour and “the worst you’ve ever seen” is more often than not completely normal and very common. Even though their spaces and possessions have gotten out of hand, the vast majority of people don’t fall into the category of true chronic hoarders.

I personally have only come across one client who was a true hoarder. Obsessive Compulsive Hoarding Disorder is an illness that needs to be dealt with in a sensitive manner, with the support of a professional mental health care provider. This type of situation can benefit from a referral to the National Study Group on Chronic Disorganization, a group of Professional Organizers, Psychologists and Psychiatrists who specialize in helping compulsive hoarders and chronically disorganized people.

If you feel that your hoarding behaviour goes beyond the normal range, ask a Professional Organizer, because we’ve seen the whole range of normal. If you do in fact have a problem, rare though this is, your Professional Organizer will probably refer you to the NSGCD or to a counsellor, but most people just need some strategies and support to declutter their lives.

The heart of your writing while sounding agreeable at first, did not settle perfectly with me personally after some time. Somewhere throughout the paragraphs you actually were able to make me a believer but just for a while. I still have got a problem with your jumps in logic and you might do well to help fill in all those breaks. In the event you can accomplish that, I will surely end up being fascinated.
