Happy New Year From Clarity Jane

Happy New Year, everyone!

2009 is here, and it’s time to make a start on getting and staying organized for the New Year. I am excited to blog about all my tips and tricks to help and encourage you along the way.

Organizing can be simple if you look at it in a practical way and separate it from the emotional stresses of guilt and trying to live up to perceived standards. Mess can make you feel guilty and overwhelmed, but you need to work past this feeling. Some of our expectations are too high to tackle all at once, so achieving them seems unrealistic, but if we break down our needs and wishes into simple achievable steps, this will help to tackle the guilty feeling of not dealing with the mess and clutter.

A common complaint when people are trying to get organized is: “But I don’t have enough time!” However, even a few minutes can make a difference. If you have only a short period of time to spend on a messy space, be fully focused and devote yourself to the task for that time period. Just start clearing the space, putting items away if they have a place, and removing them to a box or pile if they don’t yet have a place. The feeling of seeing some clarity in your space will bring about a change in the guilty feeling you have inside for not tackling the area, and you can find places for (or dispose of) your homeless items in your next block of time. The whole process could be done in one session, or it could take several sessions adding up to a few hours in all, but the key is to take the time you do have and focus on the task at hand. Every minute can make a difference.

Above all, keep moving forward. Remember that being organized is a skill to be learned; we are not born organized, so let’s work on learning, practicing and developing those skills this year.
