Organizing Your Pictures And Memories
Some time ago, we discussed what to do with boxes of old photos. But those of us who crave perfection might find it hard to just slip those photos quickly into generic albums, and box storage doesn’t lend itself to viewing and sharing the pictures.
Barb Ashcroft recently introduced me to Heritage Makers, a company that helps you turn your photos into beautiful printed books. It’s great for people who don’t find themselves computer/software friendly, since in-home workshops can take you through the process step by step. Barb offers a number of services, but from an organizing point of view, the most useful is the photo book: you can upload your photo and create a photo album right online, either using their templates or creating your own layouts. Once you are done, you order the book and it’s sent to you in the mail.
In addition to creating the photo album, Barb can also scan your photos for you for storage so you don’t have to worry about losing them. Digital storage takes up no space at all except on your computer!
Another exciting item Heritage Makers offers is the Storybook, designed to help you record your family’s stories. You can create a Storybook of one event, one year, or a lifetime of memories. The concept I love the best is the lifetime of memories—a chance to organize and preserve all the wonderful stories and memories of an older family member so that they won’t be lost with time.
It just goes to show that organizing is about more than just stuff. You can organize memories and thoughts and dreams, with just a little time and effort… to be treasured for generations to come.

Emma, I was just referring someone to your blog when I revisited this article. One very important service that we do to assist downsizing seniors is we scan their photos (we have a commercial scanner) onto DVD/thumb drives besides uploading photos into their own Heritage accounts (www.RecallWhen.com). That way we can copy the DVD and everyone in the family can get their own copy of the photos (often a sore point) and the Heritage Makers account takes care of safe storage. Then the family members can make their own projects with the photos that are their precious favourites.
