Time-Saving Tips For An Organized Closet

Here are some quick and easy steps to keep your clothes closet looking its best:

One thing that makes a closet look organized—even if that closet isn’t particularly organized—is having all the same type of hangers. If you have a random assortment of mismatched hangers, wire dry-cleaners’ hangers and plastic dollar-store hangers mixed in with wooden hangers and a few of those satin padded ones, your closet is going to look mismatched and disorganized no matter what you do with it. I recommend selecting one style of hanger and getting rid of the others; once you have this in place, your closet will instantly look better.

With all of your clothes hanging neatly on matching hangers, make sure the only things on the closet floor are your shoes and any boxes you might be storing there. Do not put bags on the floor—this tends to make the whole closet look messy, and bags are not easy to sort through when lumped on the floor. Purses and bags should be placed on a shelf at the top, or if there isn’t a shelf in your closet, a hanging rack or container can be useful to store them.

Moving past the superficial appearance and basic tidiness of the closet, let’s consider actually organizing your clothes.

The ideal solution is to have only the current season’s clothes (and shoes and accessories) in your closet at any one time. If you have the space to do so, a practical solution is to pack the off-season clothes in clear plastic bins under your bed or in whatever storage closet or locker you may have. As the seasons change, you’ll have things for the current season ready to wear, and the rest out of the way.

Group all the skirts, pants, jackets, blouses, and casual tops together, so that you can reach for items from the appropriate section without searching.

At the start of the season, hang your clothes with all the hangers turned the “wrong” way. When you’ve worn an item, turn its hanger the “right” way. At the end of the season, you will see how many of your clothes you don’t actually wear—you should consider selling or donating anything you haven’t worn once all season.

Not that anyone is actually looking in your closet, but a nice tidy presentable closet will give you a feeling of satisfaction and make your daily routine more efficient.
