Where To Buy Organizing Stuff

One question that people often ask me is, where should I buy organizing stuff for my house?

My answer is, don’t start by buying anything!

Many people seem to think that rushing out to buy organizing products is a good way to start taking control of a cluttered space. That’s actually a very expensive and impractical approach, which often only adds to the clutter problem—more stuff!

I have found, during the process of decluttering and organizing, that my clients often already have a lot of the items they need. Declutter and organize your space as far as you can first, and then decide what products you absolutely need before you go shopping. Make sure to buy only what you need (know what the contents or purpose of each item will be before you buy it, rather than guessing at the size or how many you’ll want).

You will also most likely discover, if you organize first and shop afterward, that you don’t need a lot of specialized pieces from some secret and magical organizing store. Simple items like file folders and labels can be found almost everywhere, including discount and dollar stores. Likewise, storage containers are readily available in every kind of material from cardboard to plastic to leather—it’s up to you whether your esthetic and budget match with your nearest dollar store or your favourite home furnishings brand.
