Happy New Year From Clarity Jane »

Your New Year’s Resolution To Get Organized

Is getting organized one of your New Year’s resolutions? It’s reportedly the second most popular resolution (the first being to lose weight, and the third being to stop smoking). Luckily, if getting organized is part of your plan for 2009, I can help you.

Get started now by asking yourself these three clarifying questions:

“What are three key areas in which I want to be more organized?” (TIP: be specific—goals like “paperwork and filing” and “my kitchen and meal planning” are more achievable than “my workplace” and “my home”!)

“What are some small steps I can take to start this journey now?” (TIP: make your steps active and immediate—things you can physically do now, like sorting papers, instead of things that could take time, like looking for the perfect day planner!)

“What are the positive things that can happen if I get started and make this change in my life?” (TIP: this is your incentive to actually do the work—write your potential benefits down and post them where you’ll see them regularly!)

As you do this, keep in mind what parts of your life may actually be already quite organized and working well, so that you can focus on areas where you really do need to put in some effort. And if you’re feeling overwhelmed and aren’t sure where to start, ask a friend or mentor for some ideas, or talk to a Professional Organizer.
